Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are those infections that are passed from one individual to another through unprotected sexual contact or genital contact. People often use the term sexually transmitted diseases or STDs. Usually, when one individual shows any symptom that may be called as disease state. However, one can get infected sexually but may not show any symptoms and signs and live as a healthy individual in the society. Here, he is considered as infected person but has no any sign of disease.
STIs are common in both male and females but in most cases female tends to suffer more than the males. In pregnant women it can be very serious, even life threatening for both the mother and the baby.
STDs can be caused by bacteria, fungus, or the virus. STDs caused by bacteria, fungus can be treated easily and cured with antibiotics and antifungal respectively, whereas STDs caused by virus can only be managed under control but not cured. So, it depends on us if we want to protect ourselves and reduce the risk of transmission, it’s better to be safe than sorry later. This can only be achieved by practicing safe sex. Safe sex refers to correct use of condoms and avoid multiple partners.
If you are sexually active or have multiple partners, it is wise to get tested regularly so you can start treatment as early as possible to avoid further complications.
