This disease is caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It is, after Chlamydia, the second most commonly reported bacterial STI in the UK and other developed countries.
N. gonorrhoeae is a Gram-negative, aerobic diplococcus that principally infects host columnar epithelium. Outside the human host the organism is delicate, but within the body it has a large capability to effect antigenic variation that helps it evade the host immune response and to develop antimicrobial resistance [
