Common Causes of Penis Pain

It is obvious for you to worry, feel distressed or helpless when you experience pain in the penis either during urination, sex or at other times. Pain in the penis can be due to several factors including trauma, infection or other systemic diseases. Sometimes pain can also be due to nerve compression or damage, which is burning or tingling like pain. Pain can be within the penis itself or may be due to other conditions surrounding the genital region, such as the testicles, bladder, prostate and the abdomen.

Pain in the penis can come alone or be associated with several additional symptoms that might include the following:

Rash and sores
Itching
Inflammation
Swelling
Bruising
Discharge from urethra
Smegma
Bleeding during ejaculation
Emotional problems
Erectile dysfunction
Hard lumps and growths
Premature ejaculation
Burning urination or bloody urine

What Causes Penis Pain?

Penis pain can be caused by several factors either due to local injury, or infections or other associated systemic disease and nerve damages. Some of which are listed in the articles below:

Local trauma or injury

Excessive manipulation
Bites, either human or insect
Foreign body in the urethra
Penis fracture during vigorous sex
Removal of urinary catheter
Other sexual activities
Genital injuries
Surgical procedures

Infections and inflammations

Urinary tract infection
Sexually transmitted diseases (gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, genital herpes
Prostatitis and Urethritis
Herpes zoster
Balanitis
Poor genital hygiene
Folliculitis
Allergy and irritation due to soaps, detergents or sometimes spermicides
Infected penile implants

Other causes of penis pain

Phimosis and paraphimosis
Bladder stones
Peyronie’s disease
Priapism
Sickle cell anemia
Penile cancer
Reiter syndrome

Other conditions that can be associated with penis pain

Pudendal neuralgia
Prostatodynia
Idiopathic vulvodynia
Idiopathic proctalgia
Vestibulitis
Idiopathic penile pain syndrome
Chronic pelvic pain syndrome
Anorectal neuralgia
Pelvic contracture syndrome
Pelvic congestion
Levator ani syndrome
Idiopathic orchialgia
Restless genital syndrome

Seek immediate help if you experiences below symptoms as it can sometime be life-threatening. Don’t delay to seek doctor just because your symptoms seems to be harmless that match what you see online websites, this can lead to permanent disability.

  • A sharp, shooting pain in your testicles associated with nausea or vomiting
  • Persistent burning or sharp pain at the tip of your penis
  • Painful erection that lasts more than 3-4 hours
  • Foreign body suspect in the penis
  • Unable to urinate
  • Local trauma or injury to penis or testicles
  • Cracking or popping sound during erection
  • Swelling and enlargement of penis head
