Genital Herpes is one of the common sexually transmitted disease but, unfortunately, 80% of the individuals are unaware of the infection. Genital herpes is caused by Herpes simplex virus which is usually acquired through contact with mucosal surface of a person excreting the virus. During the primary infection of HSV, one may present with painful fluid-filled vesicles/ blisters on penis or sallow ulcers on their genital areas which may be present bilaterally and with red base. Within few days they break open, crust over and heal. Burning sensation on the lesion is common findings.
As there is no cure for genital herpes, treatment is based on relieving patient’s symptoms, early healing of lesion and to decrease the duration of symptomatic shedding.
Rough sex or masturbation is one of the many causes for penile blisters. Lack of lubricantion during vigorous sex or masturbation can cause soreness in the penis that can further lead to blisters on the shaft of penis and also on penis head. Avoiding the cause or adequate use of lubrication during the act can prevent from getting blisters. These blisters heal on its own in most cases, so no treatment is necessary.
Fixed drug eruption
In fixed drug eruption the lesion erupt as a single bright red or dusky red macules or blister/bulla and is more common on lips and genital. There are several variants of fixed drug eruption based on their clinical features; bullous or blisters type is one of them. During the eruption, burning or stinging sensation may be quite common, while some may have no symptoms at all. Few may also present with mild fever, malaise and abdominal discomfort. FDE can develop within half an hour to 16 hours after drug ingestion. The lesion will heal with dark pigmentation that can last several months. When same drug is taken again the lesion usually recur on same location. Avoidance of the offending drug is only the way to prevent FDE.
Primary symptoms of syphilis can manifest as single painless blister on penis. In some cases eruption of multiple blisters can also be seen. Blisters will eventually go away on its own, but syphilis will remain in the body. If left untreated, syphilis can have serious complications that affect heart, brain and many other organs resulting in organ failure and even death. So, if you experience a painless bump on penis get checked for syphilis and other STD’s. Early treatment can completely cure syphilis.
Bullous impetigo can occur at any area of the body including genital region. Sometime bullous impetigo can also be limited to genital area only because the warmth and moisture of the genital area can provide a favorable condition for bacterial growth. The blisters or bulla may be very fragile. For limited lesion topical antibiotics might work wonder. Widespread or multiple lesions may need oral antibiotics.
Pemphigus that is limited to penis is very rare, it usually co-exist with pemphigus lesions in other areas of the body. Glans penis is the most affected area and blistering and painful erosions are quite common.
Other conditions that can sometime cause blistering lesion on penis are as follows:
Acute contact dermatitis
Autoimmune bullous diseases
Linear immunoglobulin A disease
There may be several other conditions that can sometime present atypically as blister of penis. So never decide the treatment just by what you see on the internet. Please consult your doctor accordingly. If it is sexually transmitted disease you must immediately notify your partner as they may also have been infected with the disease.
